The Chrome bug is similar to one that caused iPhones to crash earlier in the year. When an iPhone user received a text, containing a mixture of specific words and characters, while their handset was locked the bug forced their phone to reboot. The message contained the word ‘Power’ as well as Arabic and Marathi characters and the Chinese character meaning 'redundant'.
It was only effective in crashing Messages and rebooting an iPhone if sent from another Apple handset running iOS, 9to5Mac reported. Unsurprisingly, the text message content was shared on social media, with people complaining of being repeatedly sent the message by mischievous friends. Although this bug doesn't threaten a user's personal information, and there are no known examples of cybercriminals exploiting it, it will cause any work or form data entered on those tabs to be lost. According to Mr Atteka, the flaw only applies to the desktop version of Chrome and isn't seen on the Chrome app on mobile devices. Instead, entering the null characters on a phone or tablet simply causes the link to fail to load. The issue has been fixed but will still need to be rolled out through the developer and beta builds of Chrome before it's released more widely. In the meantime, however, a developer has created a game called that takes advantage of the bug.
Similar to the buzz wire game, players have to carefully move their mouse over the faces of bears lined up inside rows of trees. The random string of text is placed below each tree and one wrong move causes the tab to crash. Players are advised to make sure any work is saved before playing.
